After a big wakeup call in 2020, the tech community has taken steps to address the systemic racism in the industry. Through organizations such as Black Professionals in Tech Network (BPTN) and the Coalition of Innovation Leaders Against Racism, the tech community has rallied together to support diversity and inclusion. And to commemorate Black History Month, many are hosting events to celebrate the Black tech community.
Here are four upcoming tech events for Black History Month:
BPTN is kicking off Black History Month with a virtual celebration and panel discussion on the future of Black tech. Leaders from TD, SAP, Amazon and Asana will share their stories and personal journeys in the tech space, and discuss how to build a collective vision for the future of Black tech. February 4, online
While many leading tech companies have committed to more diversity and inclusion, the workforce does not yet reflect our society. WAYE is hosting The Black Experience in Business and Technology to look at ways at bridging the diversity and inclusion gap in business and technology. Speakers will also discuss what the future of work will look like, how communities of colour can position themselves for success, and how to navigate both the VC and entrepreneurship trajectory as a person of colour. February 16, online
In 2020, we saw many executives recommit to accelerating diversity in talent. But how can leaders make good on the promise of equity, diversity and inclusion? Black in the C Suite, hosted by Canadian Club Toronto, is hosting a panel discussion on how to nurture and amplify Black excellence and leadership in business. Trailblazing leaders from Capital One Canada, the Canadian Olympic Committee, CIBC and Boyden will discuss what’s working and what’s missing. February 17, online
COVID-19 has impacted many entrepreneurs, but Black women entrepreneurs have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic. To help remove barriers to entrepreneurship, the Rise Up Pitch Competition invited Black women entrepreneurs to pitch their businesses for a chance to receive funding and other support. The program will culminate with a live pitch competition this month. February 26, online
